Sports Injuries, ACL Reconstruction & Knee Arthroscopy

Keyhole surgery for ligament and cartilage injuries — ACL and PCL reconstruction, meniscus repair, shoulder dislocation and rotator cuff repair.

When this is considered

  • Knee twisted during sport, swelled within hours, and now gives way
  • MRI reporting an ACL tear, meniscus tear or cartilage injury
  • Shoulder that has dislocated more than once
  • Shoulder pain with weakness lifting the arm — possible rotator cuff tear

Having one of these does not mean you need surgery. It means the problem is worth examining properly.

How it is approached

1Not every tear needs surgery

A partial ACL tear in someone who does not play pivoting sport may do well with rehabilitation. Examination plus MRI decides, not the MRI alone.

2Meniscus repaired where possible

Preserving the meniscus protects the knee from later arthritis, so repair is preferred over removal whenever the tear pattern and blood supply allow.

3Graft choice explained

Hamstring, quadriceps or bone-patellar-tendon-bone grafts each have trade-offs. The choice is discussed with you based on your sport and job.

4Rehabilitation is half the result

A structured, supervised programme with clear milestones matters as much as the operation for returning to sport safely.

Typical recovery

Week 0–2
Swelling control, full knee straightening, quadriceps activation.
Week 6
Full range of movement, walking normally.
Month 3–4
Running in a straight line, once strength targets are met.
Month 9–12
Return to pivoting sport, only after passing return-to-sport testing.

Timelines are typical, not promised. Yours depends on your age, general health and how the surgery goes.

Common questions

+Can I play cricket again after ACL reconstruction?

Most recreational and many competitive players return, typically around 9–12 months, provided rehabilitation milestones are met. Returning early raises the risk of re-tear.

+Is ACL surgery urgent?

Usually not immediately. Swelling and movement are settled first. Surgery on a stiff, swollen knee gives worse results.

+My shoulder keeps dislocating. Will a belt help?

Repeated dislocations usually mean the stabilising structures are damaged. Braces help temporarily; recurrent instability is generally treated surgically.
